Sikkim is a north-eastern state of India. Formerly a kingdom, Sikkim is encircled by snow-capped mountains and beautiful scenery at every step. Founded on the Silk Road by the Namgyal dynasty in the 17th century, Sikkim is notable for its biodiversity, including alpine and subtropical climates, as well as being a host to Kanchenjunga, the highest peak in India and third highest on Earth. Almost 35% of the state is covered by the Khangchendzonga National Park and is an ecological hotspot of the lower Himalayas. The state is also known for its religious monasteries, Hindu temples, and simple settlements and is also a base for various mountaineering expeditions and river rafting.
