Information
The capital and largest city of the Indian union territory of Puducherry, Pondicherry has many colonial & heritage buildings, churches, temples, botanical gardens and statues which still preserve much of the French style colonial ambiance. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram, located on rue de la Marine, is one of the most important ashrams in India. Auroville (City of Dawn), an “experimental” township, 8 km from the city is meant to be a universal town where people of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony. Besides this, a wide variety of cuisines ranging from French, Indian and Italian to Mexican, Thai and Chinese are served in restaurants. The unique Indo-French cuisine gives tourists a taste of Puducherry’s colonial influences.
